If you have a well fenced yard and you're looking for a sweet, trainable buddy, but you hate picking up dog poop... Have you considered a goat? Contrary to popular myths, wethered (neutered before puberty) boy goats do not smell, and they are as friendly and social as you train them to be, just like dogs. They're extremely willing to learn tricks and they're full of personality, curiosity and entertaining playfulness. With a few log stump segments and a board or two, you can make a jungle gym for them to play on--and you can teach them to pull carts, carry packs, or even walk on a treadmill to power small equipment, if you're really feeling extra.
This boy is a sweet miniature from dairy lines that were selected for gentle temperaments and hardiness foraging on pasture. He doesn't need a ton of supplements or fancy grain (in fact, you really shouldn't give him grain except as a specific treat for trick training--goat wethers aren't supposed to get grain at all). He's not likely to weigh more than 35 pounds at full size, and he's already familiar with electric fence and with dogloo shelters. Bottle raised for extra sociability! You do need a dry place to store hay for winter and at least a dog igloo or doghouse for shelter, minimum.
